Rise Above Narrow-Mindedness

The Adventures Of A Woman That Loved Cats

I will never forget the day that an engineer, approached me and stated that the new team leader of our section was very upset with me. I asked, “Why?” He informed me that she felt the blouse that I wore to work was offensive. My blouse was not sheer or revealing, but had a star pattern design. She was born in the south and was frustrated over the fact, that the confederate flag could not be flown in this country. I was bewildered and could not believe that this southern woman had sought me out and due to her position, created a rivalry between us. The previous team leader of my culture, never approached anyone concerning the clothing that we wore to work. I said to myself, “This girl is crazy. After all these years, still stewing over the civil war.”

The southerners proudly strutted around and wore gray colored attire to work. The engineers that were from the north, grew weary of the southerner’s expressions of disdain, when they wore blue colored attire to work.

The southerners that had middle and upper management positions, openly displayed their dislike for individuals in our culture. A newly hired female coworker of my culture, dated a male caucasian and had a nervous breakdown. Several weeks after she was hired, everyone began to notice that she kept several prescription bottles of pills on her desk. She eventually, took a leave of absence and transferred to another workplace.

Looking back over the years, and recalling those difficult times that I lived in the southern region has increased my curiosity. In my spare time, I often compare the year that I experienced several unpleasant events, to the year that Nazi Party members were hiding and later discovered in the southern region. Even though, the southerners defensively stated, “Georgia is the confederate’s territory,” they never revealed that they bonded with the fascist spies living in our country. Some Nazi Party members have lived here since the year 1955.

Unfortunately, and even today, I am scorned for dating men outside of my culture. The restless ticks ban together, peering into my private life, searching for signs that I do not belong to their fascist party. My religious faith and inner strength has increased over the years and I overlook their psychologically narrow weak minds. The relationships that I developed were with individuals that could not cope with racism and prejudice. When they were not grieving and shedding tears from their emotional pain, we often shared moments together filled with joy and laughter. They were kind and believed in God.
